It's the 1960's, the height of the Cold War between East and West. A young British news correspondent, on home leave from his work in Moscow, meets and falls in love with a young woman. She and her father are Polish refugees from the Second World War. When Tim Quainton meets Marya's father, something about his story doesn't quite ring true. Like any good newsman, Tim can't help but follow up on his questions. When he returns to Russia, he will find he has kicked over an unexpected hornet's nest..."The Ashes of Loda" is a very decent period novel, wonderfully atmospheric of the Soviet Union and of a British perspective of the deadly cat-and-mouse aspects of East-West espionage. Tim's trail across Russia reveals a resourceful young man who will do anything for the woman he loves, even if it gets him killed. The ending is surprisingly thoughtful in examining the larger context of his dilemma. Well recommended as a good read.
